The Gibson name is almost synonymous with BBQ in this part of the country; Big Bob started cooking smoked meat back in 1925. He passed away in 1972 ... but the joint was taken over by his daughter. They have been at this same location since 1952. Good pork sandwich has a slightly tangy sauce. All five of Big Bob's kids are now in the BBQ biz. The sauce must course through their veins! Open 6:30 am to 9:00 pm 7 days a week. New location in NC, too.

Famous for pork ribs. Bob Sykes at one time operated 14 BBQ joints in this area. This is the last remaining in business, having opened it's doors in 1969. Cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad and rolls, homemade onion rings and chili are also available. Save room for Mrs. Syke's tangy lemon meringue pie on a crushed ginger snap crust. Other dessert choices include chocolate, pecan, or coconut pies. Highly recommended. Look for the welcoming pig on the roof! They also own Courtyard Café Deli & Bakery in Bessemer.

Founded by a Greek immigrant way back in 1907, Bright Star quickly outgrew 3 locations before settling here in 1915. Mirrored and marbled walls give this place an upscale diner look. They offer fresh Gulf seafood, top-notch steaks, Greek specialties such as lamb and more traditional Southern fare. The Lobster and Crabmeat Au Gratin is a favorite here. Hot lunch plates include Pork Chops with Brown Gravy and Sugar Cured Ham with Raisin Sauce; plates come with 2 or 3 vegetables like fresh buttered squash, creamed corn, baby lima beans, and candied yams. Appetizers include a good seafood gumbo. Choose from Coconut Cream, Peanut Butter, Lemon Ice Box or Pineapple Cheese pies for dessert. Eating here is a “bright” idea!

Opened by Big John Bishop and his wife Lillie in 1958. A favorite spot for locals on college football Saturdays … Roll Tide!!!. Looks like a real dive, very dark inside with a pot bellied stove. Serving ribs only with white bread, chips, soda or beer; no printed menu. John Bishop Jr. has called the setting an "indoor picnic". This place has become world famous with newer locations in Mobile and Birmingham. ESPN crews eat here while in town covering Alabama football games. Not cheap; slab of ribs goes for about $15. The meat is so tender, Bishop says you can "take your dentures out and eat my ribs". Sauce has a secret ingredient. Some think it is pot likker from cooking greens while others say its moonshine. Only Big John knows for sure.

Legendary Alabama BBQ joint about 20 miles west of Birmingham, also known as Leo & Susie's Famous Green Top BBQ. This 50's style roadhouse opened it's doors in 1951. Indoor restrooms weren't added until 1978. Tthe top is still green ... thanks to hard to find green shingles on the roof. Celebrity diners here have included Bo Jackson, George Wallace and boxer Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Well-cooked BBQ with a vinegar/tomato sauce that has a nice jolt. A new location in Jasper.
Leo & Susie’s Famous Baked Bean Recipe
6 slices of bacon
½ medium onion,chopped
chopped bell peppers (to taste)
¼ cup BBQ sauce
1 32 oz. can of pork and beans
Sauté the bacon, then add the onions,
bell peppers, and sauce.
Place in a big pot, add the beans
and cook real slow until they’re tender.

Don't miss the fabulously elegent Alabama marble oyster bar chock full of slimey grey beauties. Belly up and slurp 'em down folks. The menu also includes Stone Ground Baked Grits with Country Ham, fresh Red Snapper from the Gulf, and much more.

Dixiedining restaurant review
Located under some beautiful live oaks in suburban West Mobile. Their slogan: "It's Serious BBQ". The lean pulled pork is the highlight. "It's not just chopped up mush" says owner Bill Armbrecht, who is damn proud of his product. Slow cooked over a blend of hickory and pecan for up to 30 hours to create a nice smoky flavor. The chicken and ribs are also above average. Mama Dot's tangy BBQ sauce is outstanding; the recipe is a family secret. Everything here is homemade except the sourdough, Texas-style bread served with each entrée. The fresh, crispy cole slaw is superb and the baked beans taste great with a little Mama Dot's sauce mixed in. BBQ pork and chicken sandwiches are available in two sizes: regular and a smaller "Brick Bite". Wash it all down with a expertly brewed sweet tea with lemon, Coke or an ice cold longneck Budweiser. Dessert specials change weekly; you may get lucky and hit them when they're offering Banana Pudding. A shady swing awaits out back following your meal. Owner Bill Armbrecht is a huge Crimson Tide fan and a portrait of Bear Bryant hangs on the wall ... as does a huge sailfish (Armbrecht is an avid sportsman). Bill claims he opened the Brick Pit because he "got tired of not being able to go out and get really good smoked BBQ in Mobile". Patrons have left a variety of wacky messages in red marker all over the walls inside the restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner Tuesday – Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. The "This Ain't No Dream ... This is the Real Thing" sign out front is a tongue in cheek poke at the famous Dreamland BBQ company, which has moved into the Mobile market. The competition hasn't prevented the Brick Pit from being voted Best BBQ in Mobile for 3 years running. This is indeed "Serious BBQ" prepared with passion and attention to detail. Highly recommended!

Was noted by Southern Living as one of their favorite catfish spots in Northern Alabama, a hotbed for the whiskered rascals.
