The Gibson name is almost synonymous with BBQ in this part of the country; Big Bob started cooking smoked meat back in 1925. He passed away in 1972 ... but the joint was taken over by his daughter. Famous for pork ribs. Bob Sykes at one time operated 14 BBQ joints in this area. This is the last remaining in business, having opened it's doors in 1969. Cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad and rolls, homemade onion rings and chili are also available. Save room for Mrs. Syke's tangy lemon meringue pie on a crushed ginger snap crust. Large open-air roadside market with an outstanding produce selection. They also carry a nice line of jellies, pickles and chow chow. A small cafe in the back serves up some great pies and fresh homemade ice cream. Check out the Peach or Butter Pecan ice cream for a real treat! A great stop coming or going from the beach!
Kay Burris' Peach Pie
5 cups sliced fresh Peaches
1 unbaked 9-inch pastry shell
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 egg
Place peaches in pastry shell.
Combine remaining ingredients,
then pour over the peaches.
Bake at 350 degrees for one hour and 10 minutes.

Opened by Big John Bishop and his wife Lillie in 1958. A favorite spot for locals on college football Saturdays … Roll Tide!!!. Looks like a real dive, very dark inside with a pot bellied stove. Serving ribs only with white bread, chips, soda or beer; no printed menu. John Bishop Jr. has called the setting an "indoor picnic". This place has become world famous with newer locations in Mobile and Birmingham. ESPN crews eat here while in town covering Alabama football games. Not cheap; slab of ribs goes for about $15. The meat is so tender, Bishop says you can "take your dentures out and eat my ribs". Sauce has a secret ingredient. Some think it is pot likker from cooking greens while others say its moonshine. Only Big John knows for sure.

The lunch buffet offers up Fried Chicken, Liver and Onions, Ham, etc. The place is decorated with posters from the movie, along with autographed photos of the book's author, Fanny Flagg. The Gibson name is almost synonymous with BBQ in this part of the country; Big Bob started cooking smoked meat back in 1925. He passed away in 1972 ... but the joint was taken over by his daughter. They have been at this same location since 1952. Good pork sandwich has a slightly tangy sauce. All five of Big Bob's kids are now in the BBQ biz. The sauce must course through their veins! Famous for pork ribs. Bob Sykes at one time operated 14 BBQ joints in this area. This is the last remaining in business, having opened it's doors in 1969. Cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad and rolls, homemade onion rings and chili are also available. Save room for Mrs. Syke's tangy lemon meringue pie on a crushed ginger snap crust. Other dessert choices include chocolate, pecan, or coconut pies. Highly recommended. Look for the welcoming pig on the roof! They also own Courtyard Café Deli & Bakery in Bessemer.

Located under some beautiful live oaks in suburban West Mobile. Their slogan: "It's Serious BBQ". The lean pulled pork is the highlight. "It's not just chopped up mush" says owner Bill Armbrecht, who is damn proud of his product. Slow cooked over a blend of hickory and pecan for up to 30 hours to create a nice smoky flavor. The chicken and ribs are also above average. Mama Dot's tangy BBQ sauce is outstanding; the recipe is a family secret. Everything here is homemade except the sourdough, Texas-style bread served with each entrée. The fresh, crispy cole slaw is superb and the baked beans taste great with a little Mama Dot's sauce mixed in. BBQ pork and chicken sandwiches are available in two sizes: regular and a smaller "Brick Bite". Wash it all down with a expertly brewed sweet tea with lemon, Coke or an ice cold longneck Budweiser. Dessert specials change weekly; you may get lucky and hit them when they're offering Banana Pudding. A shady swing awaits out back following your meal. Owner Bill Armbrecht is a huge Crimson Tide fan and a portrait of Bear Bryant hangs on the wall ... as does a huge sailfish (Armbrecht is an avid sportsman). Bill claims he opened the Brick Pit because he "got tired of not being able to go out and get really good smoked BBQ in Mobile". Patrons have left a variety of wacky messages in red marker all over the walls inside the restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner Tuesday – Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. The "This Ain't No Dream ... This is the Real Thing" sign out front is a tongue in cheek poke at the famous Dreamland BBQ company, which has moved into the Mobile market. The competition hasn't prevented the Brick Pit from being voted Best BBQ in Mobile for 3 years running. This is indeed "Serious BBQ" prepared with passion and attention to detail. Highly recommended!

Large open-air roadside market with an outstanding produce selection. They also carry a nice line of jellies, pickles and chow chow. A small cafe in the back serves up some great pies and fresh homemade ice cream. Check out the Peach or Butter Pecan ice cream for a real treat! A great stop coming or going from the beach!
Kay Burris' Peach Pie
5 cups sliced fresh Peaches
1 unbaked 9-inch pastry shell
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 egg
Place peaches in pastry shell.
Combine remaining ingredients,
then pour over the peaches.
Bake at 350 degrees for one hour and 10 minutes.

Opened by Big John Bishop and his wife Lillie in 1958. A favorite spot for locals on college football Saturdays … Roll Tide!!!. Looks like a real dive, very dark inside with a pot bellied stove. Serving ribs only with white bread, chips, soda or beer; no printed menu. John Bishop Jr. has called the setting an "indoor picnic". This place has become world famous with newer locations in Mobile and Birmingham. ESPN crews eat here while in town covering Alabama football games. Not cheap; slab of ribs goes for about $15. The meat is so tender, Bishop says you can "take your dentures out and eat my ribs". Sauce has a secret ingredient. Some think it is pot likker from cooking greens while others say its moonshine. Only Big John knows for sure.

Made famous by the book and movie "Fried Green Tomatoes". The lunch buffet offers up Fried Chicken, Liver and Onions, Ham, etc. The place is decorated with posters from the movie, along with autographed photos of the book's author, Fanny Flagg. Open only for lunch Monday-Friday, this is a favorite of the Montgomery business crowd --- and with good reason; fine food and great value make this a must lunch stop when in the Montgomery area. Grab yourself an entree, two veggies, bread, dessert and drink for under $6. The menu here is laid out a week in advance. Located under some beautiful live oaks in suburban West Mobile. Their slogan: "It's Serious BBQ". The lean pulled pork is the highlight. "It's not just chopped up mush" says owner Bill Armbrecht, who is damn proud of his product. Slow cooked over a blend of hickory and pecan for up to 30 hours to create a nice smoky flavor. The chicken and ribs are also above average. Mama Dot's tangy BBQ sauce is outstanding; the recipe is a family secret. Everything here is homemade except the sourdough, Texas-style bread served with each entrée. The fresh, crispy cole slaw is superb and the baked beans taste great with a little Mama Dot's sauce mixed in. BBQ pork and chicken sandwiches are available in two sizes: regular and a smaller "Brick Bite". Wash it all down with a expertly brewed sweet tea with lemon, Coke or an ice cold longneck Budweiser. Dessert specials change weekly; you may get lucky and hit them when they're offering Banana Pudding. A shady swing awaits out back following your meal. Owner Bill Armbrecht is a huge Crimson Tide fan and a portrait of Bear Bryant hangs on the wall ... as does a huge sailfish (Armbrecht is an avid sportsman). Bill claims he opened the Brick Pit because he "got tired of not being able to go out and get really good smoked BBQ in Mobile". Patrons have left a variety of wacky messages in red marker all over the walls inside the restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner Tuesday – Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. The "This Ain't No Dream ... This is the Real Thing" sign out front is a tongue in cheek poke at the famous Dreamland BBQ company, which has moved into the Mobile market. The competition hasn't prevented the Brick Pit from being voted Best BBQ in Mobile for 3 years running. This is indeed "Serious BBQ" prepared with passion and attention to detail. Highly recommended!

Place peaches in pastry shell.
Combine remaining ingredients,

Opened by Big John Bishop and his wife Lillie in 1958. A favorite spot for locals on college football Saturdays … Roll Tide!!!. Looks like a real dive, very dark inside with a pot bellied stove. Serving ribs only with white bread, chips, soda or beer; no printed menu. John Bishop Jr. has called the setting an "indoor picnic". This place has become world famous with newer locations in Mobile and Birmingham. ESPN crews eat here while in town covering Alabama football games. Not cheap; slab of ribs goes for about $15. The meat is so tender, Bishop says you can "take your dentures out and eat my ribs". Sauce has a secret ingredient. Some think it is pot likker from cooking greens while others say its moonshine. Only Big John knows for sure.

Made famous by the book and movie "Fried Green Tomatoes". The lunch buffet offers up Fried Chicken, Liver and Onions, Ham, etc. The place is decorated with posters from the movie, along with autographed photos of the book's author, Fanny Flagg. Llocated across the street from the old railroad station, trains rumble by while you eat. The Fried Green Tomatoes have a sweet and tart taste to them. The Whistle Stop has recently started marketing their own line of dry batter mixes to use on tomatoes and other frying objects.

Housed in a lovely older home on historic Sayre Street, Martha's offers homey atmosphere and delicious comfort food. Open only for lunch Monday-Friday, this is a favorite of the Montgomery business crowd --- and with good reason; fine food and great value make this a must lunch stop when in the Montgomery area. Grab yourself an entree, two veggies, bread, dessert and drink for under $6. The menu here is laid out a week in advance. Specialties include items such as fried chicken, Salisbury steak, black-eyed peas, creamed corn and candied yams. Cakes and pies make dessert a must. No alcohol is served. Hours are 11 am to 3 pm.
