(350 George Bishop Parkway - 843 236-4666) Pork BBQ and good ole' home cookin' just across the intercoastal waterway from the Grand Strand; located adjacent to the popular Waccamaw Outlet Shops; above average BBQ sandwiches (add slaw for just a few pennies more); good all you can eat lunch buffet, although the price ($8) is slightly higher than most restaurants of its kind; buffet highlights include tangy BBQ Chicken breasts, a fine sweet potato casserole, and, for those daring diners, homemade pork rinds; one of the very few good BBQ joints in the Myrtle Beach area.

(843 651-2102) Located behind the Garden Lakes Plaza, just off Highway 17 Business; open for dinner 7 days a week; more limited hours during the off-season; tucked away from the nearby hustle and bustle of the touristy Grand Strand, this place is nothing short of an oasis; nondescript exterior of white cinder block down a gravel road; this is a popular dinner spot for locals and tourists who have been fortunate enough to locate this out of the way fish camp; a favorite of Murrells Inlet resident and gumshoe author Mickey Spillane; ten times better and about half the price of the countless Calabash style seafood emporiums in the Myrtle Beach area; fried fish rules here as well ... but Luvan's represents a triumph of quality over mass quantity; portions are plenty generous and everything is good - from the sweet tea to the fresh cole slaw to the delicious onion laced hush puppies; the Seafood Platter is a bargain at just $13.00; this platter, which includes oysters, flounder, scallops, local shrimp, and deviled crab, is also available in a smaller portion for $11; highly recommended ... if you can find it; call them at 843 651-2102 for directions and exact hours of operation.

(185 E Bay St - 843 577-7771) This is an upscale restaurant but worthy of mention because of the unique approach to Southern cuisine; "Uptown - Down South" is the slogan here; choices include Grits Cakes with Tasso gravy, Blackened Green Tomatoes, and an excellent Veal Meatloaf with Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes, Mushroom gravy and Tobacco Onions; Chef Donald Barickman has even created a "Down Home Egg Roll" incorporating collard greens and peach chutney; most dinner entrees are in the $20 range – and worth it! Highly recommended.

(1101 10th Avenue North - 843 444-0710) This top secret soul food joint is cleverly disguised as a gas station (look for the Coastal sign) near the old downtown business district of Myrtle Beach; owned and operated by Matthew and Albertha Campbell; this family run business has been quietly operating since 1992; tourists may not know about this eatery ... but the locals certainly do; all they have to do is follow their nose; menu fixtures at Matthew's include savory items such as meaty pork chops, crispy fried fish, and mouth watering fried fowl; we recommend any of the daily lunch specials, a bargain at around $5; don't miss the tender baked chicken on Tuesday, smothered pork chops on Thursday, or the tangy BBQ chicken on Friday; your choice of sides often includes pig-seasoned pinto beans, rich macaroni and cheese or good old collard greens; all specials come with rice and brown gravy and fresh baked cornbread; breakfast here is a downright steal - just $2.09 for the special including two eggs any style, grits, toast or biscuit and bacon or sausage; open Monday - Friday from 6:30 am - 6 pm; Saturdays 7 am - 5:30 pm; closed on Sundays.

(703 Front Street – 843 546-7776) Down-home diner atmosphere along the dock of a quaint port town; a locals favorite; this part of the country once was a thriving plantation area with rice and indigo as the primary crops; look for the traditional rice pilau dishes that Eddie Fesperman often offers at Thomas’; one such recipe is listed below:

  • Chicken and Smoked Sausage Pilau

1 chicken
1 lb. smoked sausage
½ cup diced onion
½ cup diced celery
½ cup diced green pepper
2 cups raw rice
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
salt and pepper to taste

- Cut up one whole chicken and parboil until the meat pulls away from the bones. Discard bones, strain broth and set aside to cool. In a large pot, saute the sausage, onion, celery, and green pepper in a small amount of oil. Add the rice, thyme, red pepper, salt and pepper and saute 10 minutes or until rice is brown. Add pulled chicken meat and two cups of broth. Let simmer on low for 45 minutes.
