(5456 Old Shell Road – 251 343-0001) Located under some beautiful live oaks in suburban West Mobile; slogan "It's Serious BBQ"; the lean pulled pork is the highlight; "It's not just chopped up mush" says owner Bill Armbrecht, who is damn proud of his product; slow cooked over a blend of hickory and pecan for up to 30 hours to create a nice smoky flavor; the chicken and ribs are also above average; Mama Dot's tangy BBQ sauce is outstanding; the recipe is a family secret; everything here is homemade except the sourdough, Texas-style bread served with each entree; the fresh, crispy cole slaw is superb and the baked beans taste great with a little Mama Dot's sauce mixed in; BBQ pork and chicken sandwiches are available in two sizes (regular and a smaller "Brick Bite"); wash it all down with a expertly brewed sweet tea with lemon, Coke or an ice cold longneck Budweiser; dessert specials change weekly; you may get lucky and hit them when they're offering Banana Pudding; a shady swing awaits out back following your meal; owner Bill Armbrecht is a huge Crimson Tide fan; a portrait of Bear Bryant hangs on the wall ... as does a huge sailfish (Armbrecht is an avid sportsman); Bill claims he opened the Brick Pit because he "got tired of not being able to go out and get really good smoked BBQ in Mobile"; patrons have left a variety of wacky messages in red marker all over the walls inside the restaurant; open for lunch and dinner Tuesday - Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday; the "This Ain't No Dream ... This is the Real Thing" sign out front is a tongue in cheek poke at the famous Dreamland BBQ company, which has moved into the Mobile market; the competition hasn't prevented the Brick Pit from being voted Best BBQ in Mobile for 3 years running; this is indeed "Serious BBQ" prepared with passion and attention to detail; highly recommended!  Visit them online at

(304 19th Street, 35020 - 205 424-9444 or 426-1861) Founded by a Greek immigrant way back in 1907; quickly outgrew 3 locations before settling here in 1915; mirrored and marbled walls give this place an upscale diner look; offers fresh Gulf seafood, top notch steaks, Greek specialties such as lamb and more traditional Southern fare; the Lobster and Crabmeat Au Gratin is a favorite here; hot lunch plates include Pork Chops with Brown Gravy and Sugar Cured Ham with Raisin Sauce; plates come with 2 or 3 vegetables like fresh buttered squash, creamed corn, baby lima beans, and candied yams; appetizers include a good seafood gumbo; choose from Coconut Cream, Peanut Butter, Lemon Ice Box or Pineapple Cheese pies for dessert. Kay Burris' Peach Pie: 5 cups sliced fresh Peaches 1 unbaked 9-inch pastry shell 1/3 cup butter, melted 1 cup sugar 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 egg Place peaches in pastry shell. Combine remaining ingredients, then pour over the peaches. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour and 10 minutes.

(5535 15th Ave East, 35405 - 205 758-8135) Opened by Big John Bishop and his wife Lillie in 1958; a favorite spot for locals on college football Saturdays … Roll Tide!!!; looks like a real dive; very dark inside with a pot bellied stove; serving ribs only; white bread, chips, soda or beer; no printed menu; John Bishop Jr. has called the setting an "indoor picnic"; this place has become world famous with newer locations in Mobile and Birmingham; ESPN crews eat here while in town covering Alabama football games; not cheap; slab of ribs goes for about $15; the meat is so tender, Bishop says you can "take your dentures out and eat my ribs"; sauce has a secret ingredient; some think it is pot likker from cooking greens; others say its moonshine; only Big John knows for sure; lunch and dinner Monday - Saturday; closed Sunday; highly recommended.

(Rt. 1, Box 659-A, 36904 - 205 654-2205) Located about 10 miles east of Butler, Alabama on the Tombigbee River; drive through the middle of a cotton field to a rustic cabin with rocking chairs on the porch; the original building is around 200 years old; quaint setting with weathered out buildings and moss-covered trees nearby; they have served fried catfish here for about 50 years; a favorite stopping point for the late Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer Carl Perkins; unusual items on menu include fried dill pickles and frog legs; most of the picnic style seating offers river views; on a nice day you can dine on the outdoor patio while a stuffed moosehead looms over your shoulder; mounted deer and wild boar also adorn the walls ... adding to the folksy, hunting camp feel; a shadowbox frame displays rattlesnake tails as well as claws and tails of various local creatures … not for the squeamish; delicious fried catfish with perfectly seasoned cornmeal coating comes with a sweet, soupy cole slaw, fresh cut french fries and corn kernel-laden hushpuppies; a nicely brewed sweet tea is served in tall glasses; a classic fish camp from the past; highly recommended.

(5075 Hwy 188 - 334 873-4514) Name of the town comes from the French term for Indian turkey; this cafe was opened by Mary Hunter in 1935; Ms. Hunter served her home-cooked Creole specialties to many famous diners including Greta Garbo; closed briefly after Mary's death, but reopened in 1990; terrific local seafood (try the soft shell crab po-boy) and a delicious down-home buffet served at lunchtime; Forrest Gump would feel right at home at this place!

Miss Myra's Pit BBQ - Cahaba Heights (Birmingham)

Old Plantation BBQ - Birmingham
(830 1st Ave N - 205 252-0443) Opened it's doors in 1950; has the look and feel of a neighborhood tavern; offers a tasty smoked pork; slogan "Yas Suh! It's cooked in de pit"; their sauce is a buttery blend of tomato puree, pepper and vinegar; cracklin' cornbread and fried pies are also popular with the regulars; some of the kitchen staff have been employed here for 35 years or more; this has kept the quality consistent throughout 4 different owners; religious theme throughout restaurant; open for lunch and dinner, Monday - Saturday; closed on Sunday.

Pat James Full Moon BBQ – Birmingham
(525 5th Avenue South, 35217 – 205 324-1007) Consistently good BBQ pork and a deep, rich sauce; each pork sandwich is topped with a hot slaw relish made from cabbage, cayenne pepper and sweet mustard; famous around town for their Half Moon cookies; they are chocolate chip cookies, half of which is dipped in milk chocolate; watch out, some say they are highly addictive!

Pelican Point Grill - Point Clear

Bob Syke's BBQ - Bessemer
(1724 9th Ave. N - 205 426-1400) Famous for pork ribs; Bob Sykes at one time operated 14 BBQ joints in this area; this is the last remaining in business, having opened it's doors in 1969; they have their own 800 number and web site (www.bobsykes.com); cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad and rolls; homemade onion rings and chili also available; save room for Mrs. Syke's tangy lemon meringue pie on a crushed ginger snap crust; other dessert choices include chocolate, pecan, or coconut pies; highly recommended; look for the welcoming pig on the roof!
